A Leadership Self Assessment By Jay Muleya

Statement of the meaning of leadership

According to my experience to what I know about leadership considering all the concepts .to me leadership of inspirational motivation is what inspired me because it appeals to my emotions. I see my self as an inspirational motivator in many aspects of my life. According to Rosenbach & Taylor (2006)  “Leadership is all about getting people to work together to make things happen that might not otherwise occur or to prevent things from happening that would ordinary take place”. I believe without inspiring your followers, the outcome will not be as effective as expected.

My short life history of leadership

I discovered leadership in myself. While at primary school I was a soccer player in the school team, through self confidence, discipline and integrity I was chosen to be the captain of the team. My personality had a positive effect on  people and I gained respect whilst interacting with  my team mates. Rosenbach & Taylor (2006) states that “Being an ethical person is the substantive basis of ethical leadership However, in order to develop a reputation for ethical leadership; the leader’s challenge is conveying that substance to others”. The ethical leadership skills  I had was all about encouraging the team to have good performances and not just aiming at winning all the time, that’s one way I kept a good team through ethical leadership. I, am the kind of person that has confidence, able to stand on behalf of others, and leading by example. Rosenbach & Taylor (2006, p28) states that “Leadership is a relationship between those who aspire to lead and those who choose to follow”. I see my self to lead my country, one day.

Individuals such as Nelson Mandela who were locked up in prison for 27years, and after   been released still had the integrity and confidence of leading a nation. For the love of the nation and his followers he pardoned his wrong doers. This is were I derived my charisma of leadership and gained confidence, and to ignore fear, because with fear you cannot lead an organisation or a team. When I watched his life story it inspired my character of leadership, also through reading material from books such as Lord of the Files and Malcolm X.

From the aforementioned paragraph that at primary school I was a football team captain, I showed my leadership through leading by example, showing the team that I cared and had compassion for them. I had a vision and mission for the team which I shared with them which showed transformational leadership. According to Sarros (2002) “Transformational leadership is a style of leadership that generates a transformation in the hearts and minds of followers, such that those followers generate higher than expected levels of motivation, commitment and self-sacrificing behaviour.” I gave them words of encouragement each time we lost the match to continue performing well and do better next time. I showed them respect and listened to their opinions. I guided the team to glory through winning provincial cups and a memorial tournament cup.

Self Analysis on Leadership (based on 4 quizzes)

See Appendix 1 for quiz

Team Building - based on the question rating I believe as a leader to have great results it is very important to build a team which will support each other and have effective communication. Rosenbach & Taylor (2006) states that “The way to build a pro-active, healthy team is through engagement, involvement and effective communication at all stages of the process.” Building moral and participating in team building exercises i.e. corporate challenges will enhance the way colleagues interact with one another.

Time Management – as a leader, it is important to set an example to the team, by ensuring that the tasks are completed in a timely manner. In order to achieve efficient results, time management skills will help lead the team without any pressure.

Training – By coaching and training my team members, I ensure that policies and procedures are understood and adhered to. I believe through coaching the team it shows caring and compassion for their further development.

Decision Making – Empowering the team by taking into account their ideas and making suggestions for better improvement to the business or the processes of a project.  According to Sarros (2002) “When empowerment is used effectively, it mobilises individuals and self-directed teams not to just carry out orders but to also innovative and improve products, services, and programs, often with breakthrough results.” Empowerment is an important tool to harness the skills to produce outstanding results.

360 Degree Evaluation

See Appendix 2 for Questionnaire

According to my girlfriend she feels that I am a natural born leader.  She said I have high confidence  and charisma  because when I go out with my mates I am always “leading the pack” She also responded that I have got the necessary qualities of a leader because I’ am  good decision maker.

My work colleague did not view me as a natural born leader as a leader He also responded that I was charismatic and confident and but held that I did not have the necessary qualities because I’am too soft.

My best friend viewed me as a confident leader because in most of the activities I got involved with him I showed him the calibre of being confident by showing the qualities of leadership. He said that I act in ways that show control over my life, which makes have the necessary qualities.

My Manager viewed me as a charismatic leader, and intellectual stimulator due to the respect I give my fellow colleagues and the contribution I make to the organization He believes that I’ am not a natural born a natural but that I have the necessary qualities and confidence He further agreed that I have charisma and this why he is always asking me to influence my work colleagues the way I do my work efficiently each time I am given the opportunity to supervise.

Conclusion

In analysing the aspects of leadership, there are various issues I have discovered to consider in order to be an effective leader. My weaknesses are the main issue I would like to improve in order for me to be an effective leader, I now know that to correct.

My weaknesses I need to be a good listener and try and lead from the inside of a group not the outside. This analysis opens a great area for debate which weather a leader is born or made?
